When leading up to an event, making sure that you have enough mental and physical rest. Mental rest means making sure work-life balance is well looked after and also that all other life stresses are put aside so that focus remains on the task at hand (rather then worrying about things that haven't yet happened eg the outcome of the race!). Physical rest means following your taper program but also no worrying about that extra mile or extra session that you didn't have time to do. On the day, you have to trust yourself and your body that it will remember what needs to be done for a great performance... and it usually does!
