Depends on how many pies I eat !!
I began cycling at the age of 14 as an alternative to a sure career as an All Black lock . It was road cycling that first grabbed my attention and I progressed through the ranks winning some club and open championships until the age of 16 when I found beer and girls more attractive . I followed the beer and girl path until the age of 19 when mountainbiking came onto the scene in New Zealand .
I quickly found I had some talent and put my arse into gear over the next 12 years . I moved quickly from novice to Pro-elite and in my first full season of racing I achieved a 2nd in the National Series . I followed this up over the next 3 years with 3 more no.2 rankings before finally breaking the hoodoo to become NZ National Champion in 1997 . I had traveled throughout this period to 14 different countries around the world and to 5 World Championships and various World Cup races .
I returned to the real world (steady full time job and relationship) in 1999 and carried on competing at a more sedate level although my mind would not let me be just one of the pack . In 2004 I trained hard and entered the Tour of Southland only to be taken out in a crash on stage 2 . I then realized I was going to be eligible to race VET 1 Category in 2005 and trained hard to achieve a 2nd Place at the National Road Cycling Champs . It is this that has spurred me on to achieve a goal I had set some years ago of a National Title in both road and mountainbiking .
Bring on the National Road Champs Dunedin 2006 !!!!!
1997 World Cup Mt Victoria New Zealand , NZs first ever world cup and I raced to a 19th Place finish (1st Kiwi and only Kiwi not to be lapped ) on a wave of home country support . Unbelievable to have all that support and to be able to understand the language !
